Rarely do we hear good stories broadcasted by the media today. Tragedy and terrible trials seem to suffocate our view of the world. Yet, beyond that gray, overcast sky, there
is a rainbow— a place for hope and happiness to dwell, a place for respite and peace. The story I am about to tell you starts with the typical rainy-day gloom, but by the time you have finished, the sun will have broken through the clouds, and enlightened your hearts.
A young woman, in the last of her years at high school, sits on a hill. Beside her is an empty bag of cookies, and she is munching the last one. Her younger brother of eight sits besides her, enjoying the game that is unfolding before him. The girl’s mother is at home, with an illness. The young woman relishes the last taste of the treat in her mouth, knowing that after the game, she will return to a home, devoid of any groceries, and no hope for any in the near future. She comes from a beautiful family, always smiling and happy, so happy that no one even has the slightest hint of what kind of double life she leads…. For the longest time, she didn’t want to share her condition with anyone, understandably. But after her game finished, she came up to me, and explained the situation. So affected was I by her quiet plea for help, I decided to contact her coach to see if a conference could be set up with counselor to provide the resources her family so desperately needed.
Tossing and turning in my bed that night, I knew that there
had to be something more I could do to help this young woman. And I knew that there must be more children in our community that were hungry and in similar situations. Through research, I stumbled upon a website that caught my attention. Please visit www.greatamericanbakesale.org. Here you can find out how to help ensure that no child in America will fall asleep at night with an empty stomach. I realized that by hosting a bake sale along with my family, I would be able to help people such as this young woman. The best part about this bake sale is that it benefits children right in
your community, so that you can feel the joy of giving on a personal level. The profits raised go directly to programs and organizations dedicated to feeding children who are less fortunate. The Great American Bake Sale is sponsored by Domino Sugar and C&H Sugar, along with Food Network and Family Circle. The spokespeople stars are Sandra Lee and Duff Goldman. So please, take the time to look into this program— in doing so, you can help fight the silent war against hunger, and together we can conquer!
We would also like to have your visit our bake sale on:
Thursday, April 9th, 2009 at
143 Union Blvd.
Lakewood, CO 80228
From 11:00 to 4:30
We will be in the lobby of the building that says “Wells Fargo”.
If you can’t make the Bake Sale, but would still like to contribute a cash donation, visit our Great American Bake Sale team website called C&J Bake Sale to directly contribute to the wellbeing of all malnourished children in our community. Donations can be made at any time as there are no time limits. Our goal is to raise $500 for this wonderful cause! We will keep you up to date with the results.
